There's a post that made it to the main of HN about text compression with PNG. There's nothing surprising about it, PNG is using Deflate, which is LZ77, which is basically the same thing as zip and gzip.

It is much more interesting, in my opinion, to try lossy compression algorithms. How about an image compressed by MP3? Let's start with a screenshot of Princess Maker saved as RGBA data - 868 KB.

Open this raw data as unsigned 8-bit PCM, and export to MP3 in different bitrates. Then load MP3 and export back as unsigned 8-bit PCM. Then read back this as RGBA image.

128 kbps MP3 is 322KB, which is less than RAW image (or uncompressed BMP), and hey look, it almost fully preserved the colours. 32 kbps file is only 86KB, but all the colour information is lost.

Fun part: exporting image as RGB will give much worse results, as alpha-channel works as sort of separator for pixels

I'm not like a die hard Linux fan, I don't (yet) have any programmer socks or lil tux plushies around, I don't yell "I use arch btw" out of the window every morning (I don't use arch btw), I don't sell Linux at every family gathering or shit on windows users on youtube every monday morning, but, I have to say, fuck, Linux overall got reaaaally good since I first used it about 10+ years ago.

Really, my old 8 years old laptop with Pop_OS!, plasma and other stuff on it; I love to use it.
Sure, the hardware is quite old, so it does have some hiccups but overall, fantastic experience.

I still have some barriers to fully move to it as my full time daily driver, mainly some photoshop features and OBS/streaming related stuff/software/plugins.

Gimp is definitely a decent alternative to photoshop, but there are still some stuff with it I'm missing or don't really like (I'm really missing things like dynamic filters, adjustment layers, etc.).
Some shortcuts are a bit dumb but I ended up changing them to stuff I'm more used to.
But for 75-90% of my work/stuff I create, it's fine.

OBS is a bit of a more complex issue.
Some software I use with my streaming setup are not working on Linux.
Maaaybe I could get around it with wine for some of them, definitely not all of them tho.
So, I will have to find either replacements or just get rid of some stuff.

But still, overall, I do prefer Linux as a whole over Windows. And not just for the whole "windows is a spyware in the shape of an OS" thing.
I don't know, just in terms of customizability, overall feeling and freedom, I'm having a way better time with something like Plasma.
Just the general feeling of "if I want my OS to look and feel like that and be able to do that, I can" is fantastic.

My first time with Linux was with Ubuntu 10 years ago to recover some files on a family computer I bricked.
I never pushed it more than that.
But now, especially with Microsoft soon ending support for Windows 10, the jankiness, spyware and adware adjacent tactics of Windows 11, the vaaaast improvement on drivers, ease of access for new users, and especially when it comes to gaming; I'm super hopeful for Linux in the next few years.

Protože se měnila legislativa a ruší se VTP, dovolím si pár poznámek o tom, jak dnes technická kontrola probíhá.

Na #STK stačí přijet s ORV (malý techničák), to je jediný doklad, který potřebujete k provedení technické prohlídky #auta . Zároveň ale musím upozornit na to, že do první technické určitě bez VTP (velký techničák) nejezděte!

Potíž je totiž v tom, že administrativně ne všechny položky z VTP se dostaly i do elektronického techničáku (potvrzeno na dvou ze tří aut, která jsme vezli), takže se vám úplně klidně může stát, že bude na stanici problém vydat známku kvůli tomu, že vám například chybí zápis alternativních rozměrů kol a technici to tak ověřují podle dat ve VTP.

Zároveň chci upozornit na velice dobře schovanou, ale skvělou možnost si svůj VTP zkontrolovat ještě před výjezdem na adrese https://www.dataovozidlech.cz/otevrenaData/vypisy - stačí zadat VIN (identifikační číslo karoserie) nebo číslo technického průkazu
