vkc // Veronica Explains

Hi folks. Planning to return soon.

I will likely be spinning up my own instance and migrating this account to it. My instance has been great but I'm wanting to run my own for complicated reasons related to being a content creator.

Hopefully your follow will automatically move and whatnot. If not, it's been fun. :P

What should my personal instance URL be?

(I will not necessarily abide by the results of this poll.)

50% social.linux.mom
15% linuxmom.com
34% linuxmom.net

@vkc Why not just linux.mom? You can have that as the instance name (as in the server part of the username) while still having the actual instance hosted on a different DNS name. For example my instance is actually on social.treehouse.systems

@ilmari @vkc I’m adding another vote for this - linux.mom is perfect. If not that though, I’d go .net

@ilmari Does that work? I use `linux.mom/whatever` as a snappy redirect for a few longer URLs, so I guess I assumed my Mastodon would need to be entirely separated.

One problem with `.mom` is that the registrar apparently doesn't have a set price for it, and I always worry they'll balloon my price if I "make it big". But maybe that's irrational? I don't know.

@vkc @ilmari Stock Mastodon uses nginx for ingress, so you should be able to rewrite or redirect URLs before they hit your instance.

@vkc hot take but you could just subdomain your main site (the "we have domains at home" option)

@t54r4n1 I remember why I didn't consider it- my main domain is vkc(dot)sh and I didn't want to have vkc(at)vkc(dot)sh or some similar repeating problem. :/

@vkc What prevents you from pushing the "Veronica Explains" brand here? Would there be a significant amount of people who wouldn't find you if you didn't use some form of "Linux Mom"?

@reallyzen "VeronicaExplains" just looks too long to me on a handle. Plus I have those domains reserved for future SEO use, whereas the *linux*mom* options I already own and don't imagine using aside from the social context.
